The End!

I would have to say that Learn and Play has been a successful program. I finally understand what RSS feeds and Delicious are, which is awesome, and discovered new and exciting websites through the Web 2.0 awards. Also, although I have had a Gmail account for a few years now, I never thought to venture into their Calendar and Documents features, which I use all the time now. So, I think I did a great job.

It's cool working for a library system that understands the importance of educating their staff on stuff like this, and I would definitely participate in another Learn-and-play type program.

I'm also very excited about owning my first ever Flash Drive!

The Penultimate Thing

I was really surprised to see all the new eBook and Audiobook titles on MOLDI, especially considering the poor selection of eFlicks (excluding Bigfoot Terror and Beach Girls and the Monster, of course). Of course, as I mentioned in the Podcast post, my Shuffle makes listening to audiobooks kind of difficult. And I'm not keen on reading books on my computer. My brother-in-law (with all his awesome toys) is the proud owner of an Amazon Kindle, and I believe he uses MOLDI to download books on it (I could be wrong, he could be paying Amazon for his books...but MOLDI is free! That would be crazy!)
So someday when i have the means to buy a real iPod and a Kindle, I will use MOLDI all the time.

Podcasts

My iPod, Hi-Yo Silver. Or, maybe it's just a picture of a silver iPod Shuffle from the internet.

I don't really listen to Podcasts, mainly because I don't work in front of a computer, and my portable listening device is an iPod Shuffle, which is not quite what you want to use to listen to podcasts. (I guess it could work, it would just mean removing all the music on there and then put the podcasts on there, in the exact order I want to listen to them. This is because the shuffle is the small, screenless iPod, so you can either shuffle all the audiofiles to listen to them, or listen to them in the exact order that you set it up on iTunes to play. So, it's kind of a pain)

But, I do listen to NPR (yep, NERD), so I do know of a few Podcasts I would probably listen to if it was easier for me. Things like This American Life, Science Friday, Radio Lab, etc. They had a really well-organized Podcast Directory on their website. I didn't really like the other directories we were asked to look at, mainly because there were WAY too many podcasts to dig through, even with them organized by subject.

Weezah!

I think this video is an appropriate one to post for this Blog. (The embed thingy was unfortunately "disabled by request") This music video compiles all the weird Youtube video phenomena and makes fun of them. And also, I can't help myself, but I love Weezer, and their crappy new Red album too. I'm not the only one, either; my brother-in-law downloaded The Greatest Man Who Ever Lived and Troublemaker on Rock Band so we can rock out to them.

I also love Youtube. Whenever someone asks me, "have you seen....[fill in blank]" I'm there. One of my favorites right now is "Shoes" (look it up, I'm not going to post it because, well, there are swears in it.)

Also, to show all you folk out there how awesome I am at "embedding", here is the biggest nerd ever:

Oh, Ziggy, will you ever win?

The one thing I noticed about the Power Tools page is that if you try to find it without clicking directly on the link (by going to CML's Homepage and trying to locate it from there), it's not very easy. It's on the very bottom, right-hand side of the page, which makes it seem like the least important thing on the web-page (I don't know about most people, but when I go to any website, I rarely take the time to scroll down.) That made me feel a little sad. Then I clicked on StumbleUpon and "stumbled upon" Scott Meets Family Circus (subtitled, or tagline: "When Jeffy and the gang get confused, I step in to clarify"). Just like Garfield Without Garfield, the author takes an annoyingly unfunny (and annoyingly wholesome) comic and, well, makes it funny. There aren't very many posts yet, but it has serious potential.
So this Thing was definitely a success.

And the winner is...

The site I discovered that had a lot of potential awesomeness was imcooked. So, I didn't actually watch any videos (it's kind of a pain to watch videos at work) but I will at home one of these days. This is one of those things that makes me think that I will actually cook something that's not frozen and out of a box that has the cooking instructions in easy-to-decipher pictures.
Another site I liked a lot was Yelp. Who doesn't like to read reviews of places you already have an opinion of? (I don't care what "fen z from toledo ohio" thinks, Surly Girl is awesome!) Also, I will probably use it next time I travel to another city.
Other Winners in my book:
Craigslist
Linkedin
Threadless
Last.fm

DIE, Microsoft Office, DIE!

I'm sold on Google Documents. It's easy to use, conveniently saved online, and Free! I realized, after discovering it, that my life is going to be so much easier, both at home or work. (Among other things, I love that it constantly saves your work, because no matter how many times you remind people, they don't SAVE SAVE SAVE!!!)
It's so easy to upload things from MS Word too, and, lo and behold, it looks just like the original! No more crazy messed up margins! This is usually a HUGE problem with Resumes that are transfered from one word processing program to another.

On a side note, Rock Band 2 is just as wonderful as I imagined. Tons of new songs, well chosen for all instuments, including bass. New and improved guitar! (it's heavier and the strummer is perfect compared to the last one) You can also load all the songs from the last one onto the new game, and play them together.

that's all for now.

Sandwiches?

I checked out the Sandbox for CML's Wiki, and, at first, it made me want a PB&J sandwich, too (check out Molly's "favorite quote"). But then I realized that I have no money and that's exactly what I've been eating almost every day this week. Sad. So I made myself fell better by singing the dancing banana Peanut-Butter-Jelly-Time song.

But, seriously folks, go check out my favorite movies and TV shows (us library folk have good taste!) I used my real name, just for all you stalkers out there.

#15: Wikis

My favorite of the Library Wikis we were asked to look at were the ones that had the same layout as Wikipedia. The familiarity is comforting, especially when you spend less time getting used to a new website and more time looking at information.

Wikipedia is an amazing tool. I use it for many reasons, but my favorites are to look at story synopses of musicals I have never seen, and also, to see what songs are going to be on any new Guitar Hero and Rock Band games that come out. I love that people take the time and effort to enter all this pertinant information.

(Speaking of which, the songs I am most excited about for Rock Band 2 are:
Eye of the Tiger by Survivor
Float On by Modest Mouse
Psycho Killer by the Talking Heads
I hope my sister's boyfriend buys this game SOON so I can play it.)

library two point oh

What is weird about Renaissance Festivals is that it's an event attended almost exclusively by BIG NERDS. Its purpose may be to illustrate that that things weren't so great back then. No electricity!?! Mud?!? Torture Devices?!?!? JUGGLERS?!?!?!?!
And then there was this guy:

DANIEL, DUKE OF DANGER. He was pretty awesome, especially his corny jokes which revolved around the theme of What Happens When You Drop Out of College.

What they definitely did not have in that backward time of jousts and wenches was LIBRARY 2.0. (Did they have libraries back then? Did people know how to read? )

Thing #14 reminded me a lot of library school, and the many, many articles we had to read about vague concepts. Basically, it's a broad topic, but here are my thoughts in a nutshell: I think it's very cool that a lot of libraries are trying so hard to stay modern and relevant, and that there a lot of non-library folk who have no idea that libraries are so hip.

There you have it.

Everyone else posted a picture of "delicious" food when they blogged about del.icio.us, so there's mine. The most delicious food ever.

And here is my del.icio.us.

So I just created another account that will probably end up like my Friendster account: Forgotten and unused, out in Internet world. But, unlike Friendster (I used to love my Friendsters), I cannot think of a single reason to use Twitter. I don't care what you are doing RIGHT NOW (or ten minutes ago, for that matter) and I don't care for you to know what I am doing.
This is the one and, hopefully, only "Thing" that made me feel old (those darn kids and their Twitter!)
Here's my account, and my two Tweets.

Librarything vs. GoodReads

Having GoodReads makes me feel like I will never be one of those old ladies at the library who can't figure out which books they already read, so checkout like 25 to make sure they get at least one new one. ("Can you tell me every single thing I checked out EVER?")

LibraryThing seems like the same thing, except I think maybe, if I ever have time, I can use it to catalog all the books I own, which would be fun, but will probably never happen.

So here it is so far.

STOP Stealing My Internet

The only time I really spend perusing the internet is at the checkout station at that other library I work at (Not CML!) when it's slow. Basically, what I read on there is what my friends read. Like, when someone sends me a link from a blog or somesuch place, I'll say to myself, "Wow, this website seems kinda cool, maybe I'll look at it more often." So these are the websites that are on my Bloglines account, which should be called, Stuff My Friends With Good Taste Look at on the Internet That I Have Started to Read Also.
I find this a way more effective way of finding good things to read than any of the search tools.

Evil Dead: The Musical

Evil Dead: The Musical on the BIG SCREEN!

"Producer Don Carmody (CHICAGO, LUCKY NUMBER SLEVIN, the ASSAULT ON PRECINCT 13 remake) is negotiating with Sam Raimi to bring the Canadian originated, now off-Broadway production EVIL DEAD: THE MUSICAL to the big screen...in 3-D no less!
Featuring songs such as “I’m Not A Killer” and “Look Who’s Evil Now”, the stage version featured an audience-participation area known as the “splatter zone”

I saw this musical in Canada back in May, and it was the single best night I have ever spent at the theatre. It was so over-the-top ridiculous; some other songs not mentioned in the blurb above include "Do the Necronomicon" and "What the %&$^ was that?!" I can't remember ever laughing so hard during a musical. However, one of the biggest draws is the "Splatter Zone", the first two or three rows of seats where you are guarenteed to get stage blood on you, and are encouraged to wear a white t-shirt to take home as a souvenir. A fun part of the experience is the anticipation of being "Splattered."

Before 3D became digital, I always liked the concept, but could never really enjoy the movies because I couldn't see the 3D (you know, with those blue-and-red lensed glasses) I could tell what it was supposed to look like, but would just see two one-dimensional pictures blurred together. Not sure what the deal is with that, but my sister has the same problem.

BUT with digital 3D technology, I have no problem. They just need to figure out a way to include the splattering....

(like at MGM studios in Disneyworld, they have a 3D Muppet Movie, where, at one point, Fozzie uses one of those joke lapel flowers to spray the audience....and then everyone really gets sprayed! Wokka Wokka Wokka!)

Flickr Cont.

So this is pretty yellow on the Flickr Color Finder. I also made a Flickr Chia Pet out of a Vampire Baby, and did one of those Mosaics (which don't come out very good, do they?).

I was on my first cruise ever last week and was very interested to see on the map they leave in your stateroom that the boat had its very own Library! Of course I had to see it, so I dragged Paul (rolling his eyes the whole way) to Deck #4 and searched around for it. Turns out, the "Library" was about 75 random, tattered-looking books in a small bookcase with glass doors. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if most of them were left behind by forgetful "cruisers." Surprisingly, though, I noticed a lack of anything by Dan Brown, Danielle Steele, and any contemporary fiction that would be considered a good beach read. Instead, they had books by Umberto Eco and Louis L'Amour, and two volumes of Oxford Guide to English Literature and an encyclopedia of World Religions. To check out the books, you just wrote your name, stateroom number, and book title in a binder next to the bookcase. For a three day cruise, there were a surprising amount of titles checked out. I guess not everyone on cruises gorges on buffets, booze, and sun the whole time.
